Sponsor Spotlight: Lutheran Medical Center

By: Latia Henderson Published: October 19th, 2015

Today we are shining our spotlight on Lutheran Medical Center, a proud supporter of the medical center “shop” at Young AmeriTowne Belmar.

Young AmeriTowne is an award-winning educational program serving over 25,600 Colorado 5th graders (53% of all Denver metro 5th graders) every year. The program is designed to teach 10-year olds about money management, free enterprise, economics and workforce readiness in a fun and hands-on way. The program’s in-school curriculum culminates in a day in “Towne” which features shops branded by participating sponsors.Medical Center 1

Through the Lutheran Medical Center shop, students are immersed in providing high-quality medical care while experiencing a career as a Doctor, Health Technician, Manager, or Accountant for a day.

Thank you for inspiring and preparing young people for the 21st century workforce.

The Medical Center “Shop”

Medical Center 2Quality is an important component of the Young AmeriTowne curriculum.  When students meet in business groups at school before their visit to Towne, students discuss how they will provide excellent health care and customer service to their patients and customers. During their day in Towne, Medical Center Health Technicians and Doctors hand out symptom cards to citizens throughout Young AmeiTowne. “Sick” citizens then visit the Medical Center to receive care. Health Technicians check the patient’s height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure. Doctors look up the symptoms on a diagnostic computer and then explain the disease to the patient. Finally, a student Manager oversees the entire process for quality control.

In addition to providing valuable medical services, the Young AmeriTowne Medical Center has a goal to earn enough money to pay back its debt. To make a profit, the Medical Center charges each patient a $2.00 co-pay for the care they receive. The Medical Center Accountant also collects at $14.00 medical insurance fee from each business in Towne.  Student employees can sell sticky, glow-in-the-dark eyeballs to patients and customers, and creative students have even charged customers for ambulance (wheel chair) rides around Towne.
